When Mollie met Chemo Duck…

IMG_1990

“Mollie hates her trips to day clinic (we’re 5 weeks in since her diagnosis) and normally cries or shouts no matter how long we are there for. Our last visit started off the same, however when she was given her Chemo Duck and the port, cuff and syringes were explained to her and she could have a play she cheered up. Even more so when “Quackers ” was dressed in her mermaid costume. Chemo Duck helped her interact with other children, as the mermaid costume was very much admired and I’m sure when she’s in next time, June’s costume will keep her occupied. When Mollie’s port went in she understood it was like Quackers’. Her brother Jake loves his Huggable Hope duck too!

I just want to say a huge thank you to you all and everyone who makes the outfits too, it’s such an amazing thing for the children to have and us as parents to help explain something otherwise impossible.” – Clare, mum

Did you know? The outfits for Chemo Duck and Huggable Hope are created and donated by volunteers who live here in the UK and some even live abroad! The designs include Superheroes, Unicorns, Mermaids, Emergency Services, CBeebies, Disney, Lego, Pokémon, Princesses, Mario & Luigi, Army fatigues, Football Kits, Dinosaurs and an array of day to day outfits too!

A visit to hospital will most likely induce some level of fear and anxiety for adults and children. However with the outfit system, children can look forward to their hospital visit, as they get to choose a new outfit for their duck!

Thank you to everyone crafter (members of Blue Light Babies & Rivers MEET Chemo Duck Club) who has made, makes or who has just started making outfits for these special ducks. The impact your kindness and creativity brings for families facing childhood cancer is immeasurable. We don’t know where we would be without you.
